i have just discovered the amazing scott fife and i am so IN LOVE with his work! fife uses archival cardboard, screws and glue to construct his work. delightfully rugged yet astonishingly refined. exhibiting sine 1976 these photos were from his exhibition called 'bear season' that was held this summer at platform gallery, seattle. oh boy do i wish i had been there! previous works include bridget bardot, john wayne and a t-rex and elvis presley!

My Friend the Bear

Down in the bone myth of the cellarof this farmhouse, behind the empty fruit jars the whole wall swings open to the room where I keep the bear. There's a tunnel to the outside of the far wall that emerges in the lilac grove in the backyard but she rarely uses it, knowing there's no room around here for a freewheeling bear. She's not a dainty eater so once a dayI shovel shit while she lopes in playful circles. Privately she likes religion—from the bedroom I hear her incantatory moans and howls below me—and April 23rd, when I open the car trunk and whistle at midnight and she shoots up the tunnel, almost airborne when she meets the night. We head north and her growls are less friendly as she scents the forest-above-the-road smell. I release her where I found her as an orphan three years ago, bawling against the dead carcass of her mother. I let her go at the head of the gully leading down to the swamp, jumping free of her snarls and roars. But each October 9th, one day before bear season she reappears at the cabin frightening the bird dogs. We embrace ear to ear, her huge head on my shoulder, her breathing like a god's.

after a very long blogging break, mostly due to being poorly and too exhausted to turn on my computer let alone write a post. Its nice to be back. Yesterday was spent eating kippers and scones with jam (not together!) at the tearooms at the butterfly and the pig with emily. Yum. Highly recomended if you are in glasgow.

as a keen cyclist i am sad that my beloved bike has been gathering dust over the last few years due to my chronic illness. so i enjoyed watching the glasgow sky ride outside my window today and so did orla and cissy. (excuse the dirty windows due to building site across the street)

i have came across two great sources of people who want to brighten up the gaps and cracks in their roads and pavements. here is some cool work from van vormann and his many helpers all around the world. i am very inspired and planning to join in this project here in glasgow, scotland. so watch this space......................

and here juliana santacruz herrara has filled the cracks in roads with wonderful bright fabric colours. watch this wee video here showing how it's done. it's fab. so don't be surprised if one day you see me out and about adorning the many potholes, cracks in pavements and walls of glasgow city centre soon, armed with a bag of chunky wool and bits of lego!

i cant put into words how much i LOVE LOVE LOVE mina perhonen. (i have already mentioned a few times!) i love the colours, prints, designs and ideas.maybe one day i will be lucky enough to own something by them. until then i will just swoon at the images from there new shop called metsa (sadly they don't ship outside japan) and enjoy watching their weird but wonderful video.

the end of july saw two more cats birthdays - orla turned three and cissy who has been here for two years turned a pretend three, two lovely trips to luss at loch lomond and two trips to merchant city festival which was in my neck of the woods. and at last, thank goodness -some much needed sun! (although it's back to rain now its august).

i should be posting a tad more frequently now as i finally have a computer that actually works thanks to my buddy emily. hurrah! cheers em and enjoy your new mac!

biba turned 5 on monday. well it was her pretend birthday as she came to live with me 3 years ago and being a rescue cat she was thought to be around 2ish. she had a pretend fishy birthday cake which she kindly shared with orla and cissy. blue sky and some sun for a change, making the most of it sitting out on my lovely ikea chairs.

i am very sad to have found out that my lovely sweet cat biba has a chronic heart condition, she has to take medication always now. she's been hiding under the bed and sofa lots, as cats can do when they are poorly, and no longer wants her daily cuddles. my poor biba bella.

well i have been cheered up big time! i stepped in out the rain to see rita mcgurn's fabby crochet installation at the gallery, glasgow. (sadly finished now) wow! huggable art with so much colour and humour. i think as rita made everything at home, she must have a great big house for all her rugs and cuddly folk! seeing them all it sure brightened up my day!

when i was in primary school i crochet dresses for my dolls and had a mini exhibition in the schools display cases. was one of my proudest moments. can't seem to crochet for toffee now though.

my thoughts over the last few days have been with japan, the loss of lifes and destruction, so sad.

so many creative bloggers have been coming together to help to raise money to help.

hearts and hands is a raffle for japan where 100% of proceeds go towards relief efforts. raffle tickets cost $10 (approx £6) and you can win something from over 60 participating artists and small businesses including abby try again, herriot grace and skinny laminx.

i hope to take part in pray for japan a charity art exhibition by paumes to be held 5-17 april in japan. if you wish to participate too here are the details.

these beautiful collages are by the very talented mixed media artist viv richards who also just happens to be my best buddy. she has just (finally!) opened up an etsy shop to sell giclee prints of these 5 designs which are inspired by beaches and her travels to places like wales, cornwall and even scotland! i really love the last one, with the little person walking near the rocks.

viv loves working with texture and colour and enjoys 'happy accidents' when mistakes happen and its like the picture then just 'takes over'.

at the moment you can see some of viv's artwork in the se20 group exhibition at ripley arts centre, bromley where her hubby dom (also super talented) is taking part too. on until 25th feb.

my first little trip out the city this year up north was icy cold, although not quite as freezing as december which was the coldest since records began. the year therefore began as the last one ended with lots of hot chocolate, hibernating under blankets and wearing plenty of thermals! as much as i like keeping cozy i am so ready for spring!

it has been snowing here the last few days. i love snow, but it feels like the country has ground to a halt due to record low temperatures and treacherous road conditions. its freezing here especially as my boilers packed in. so its time to get hyggelig with woollens, blankets, hot water bottles, lots of hot chocolate, snowboots, scarfs and snuggly cats.

one of the very many (over 200) amazing exhibitors at tent london is showshow 'sustainable danish design with a loving touch'. i am drawn to these capulo and condessa chairs from oficina kreativa, not only because they are based on classic mexican designs from the 1950's but also the fact that the designers engage socially with the factory in a low income region of mexico, working with issues such as saftey, fair wages, equal rights and make sure all the plastic used is recycled and free of toxic metals.

this new work by richard wright uses a handpainted repeated blue mofit that plays on prespective, varying as the eye travels across and down the wall. turner prize winner wright considers paintings less as discreet objects but more as ideas. the paintings only become activated by the vision of the spectator and exhibition ended, the work is painted over and the event is complete. this temporary nature is deliberate: ''i am interested in the fragility in the moment of engagement-in hightening that moment, to see a work knowing it will not last, emphasizes the moment of its existance''.

cissy: the cat who thinks she's a tiger.

i read in a book by a cat 'expert' that as cats are natural predictor's they need a bit of a challenge getting food, especially indoor cats who can get bored, so its a good idea to introduce our cats to 'food foraging' by hiding kibble in a variety of places for a more natural way of feeding. well i started mine of easily by placing some lightly folded paper 'goody bags' near where they normally would be fed.

three non amused faces looked at me as if i was bonkers.

so i shook the little bags.

nothing.

i opened them up and showed my cats what was hidden inside.

nothing but blank stares.

i left the kitchen and came back a few hours later to find 3 hungry cats and lots of untouched food bags. yup just as i thought my cats are smart. why go to any trouble when they can just wait and get it in a bowl!

i certainly have two sides to my personality when it comes to design, and one example of that is frocks. when im not lusting after orla's brightly coloured retro inspired pattern dresses like this one or wishing for something like this from eley kishimoto, i love simple clean lines in natural coloured linen and wool. my favourite designer of linen frocks is pamela tang. in an ideal world i would have one of each, well i guess i can dream.

astralian based pamela spent a decade in interior design before returning to her roots and concentrating on hand made products. she has even more amazing designs and also artworks in her shop.

what orla kiely's new fragrance smells like. it contains some of my favorite scents like green tea, rose, bergamot and chocolate, so i'm sure i would love it. but if i'm honest even if It stunk and i could afford it i would buy it just for the cute bottle design anyway. so here's hoping i get a visit from santa this crimbo.

sad fact: a few years ago when in london i saw orla and her family checking out some converse in office shoes. sadly i was itching to go up and let her know i practically worshiped the ground she walked upon, however i managed to restrain myself, thank goodness.

i have been checking out the eduardo paolozzi exhibition at the glasgow print studio, he was one of the most inventive and prolific artists of the 20th century, studying at edinburgh college of art and at the slane school of art in london.

paolozzi's innovative use of collage, part influenced by dada and surrealism, translates well into screenprint of which he was a master of, and used this technique to create many of his most famous and memorable prints in the 1960's.

this one is turing 6 (2000) from the turing suite. the exhibitions runs until 26th september and well worth a visit if you are in glasgow. more info here.

i've not spent much time at the allotment this summer. I'm either too poorly or its been raining cats and dogs. i did get a wee trip there last week however when we had a nice, dry, sunny day for a change. emily has been busy being all green fingered, and thanks to her we have a plot full of veggies ready to use including potatoes (or tatties as we call them in scotland) and she has a recipe for using them along with a fab illustration here.

another week and another cat's birthday! this time it is the turn of cissy tigerlilly to have a happy birthday post! truth is i was not actually 'looking' for a third cat, i was happy with just two plus i could barely afford to look after another kitty, somehow though we were brought together and i am so glad i gave cissy her 'forever' home with us. despite being a beautiful kitty she was not going to be 'snapped up' at the rescue centre as she needed re homed with other indoor cats due to bad eyesight (so she could follow them around), plus she had a tendency to greet you by latching every claw and her teeth onto your arm! hence the tiger in her name! however, against the odds i knew she belonged with us.

i brought her home a year today, when she was thought to have been about a year old. so today we will celebrate her 'pretend' second birthday. orla loved cissy from the start, however it took a while for biba to adjust to having a new sister. they get on ok now despite the fact that cissy can be a bit of a bully sometimes, and i even caught them curled up together in bed recently. cissy also has another side to her, a real loving side that has earned her the name 'snuggle bug' or 'snuggler' as she seems to love the occasional cuddle with me under the duvet, in my arms. she also is very playful and is very sociable around folk. she is currently on a very strict diet due to her love of grub, and is known to scoff hers then try and polish off biba and orlas as well!

i think i may have just found my dream holiday home, a beach chalet, via here and found here. i think hanging out there with some friends and a few ciders would make me very hyggelig happy indeed! it would even be fun to visit in the winter with that log burning stove to keep me cozy! studiomama also have a cool shop where you can buy instructions how to make your own recycled chairs from old pallets (like above) and get instructions to make a stool for free!

two years ago this morning i went to check on my little rescue cat biba who had been with me for 9 days and had been hiding under the sofa most of that time (the pdsa had told me she was an extremely nervous and timid cat). when i peeked my head under the sofa i saw she was not alone, curled up next to her was a teeny tiny little kitten! wow what a surprise! the rescue centre had not known she was pregnant, and she was very thin so it didn't show. i named the little one orla dot (the first thing i noticed was her black tail with a little white dot at the end)

orla is now two years old today (still teeny tiny) and although quite shy like her mum she is very naughty, cheeky ,funny and lets you know what she wants and when! she has been a constant source of fun and joy, and although she has never liked getting picked up and cuddled (also just like biba) she is very generous with her 'kisses'. she loves to play 'fetch' and her current favorite pastime is 'the tunnel and lobster game' above. she is the nicest surprise i have ever had! (although when she wakes me up in the night by 'rattling' the blinds i think otherwise!) happy birthday teeny!

today is the 4th 'pretend' birthday of my wee shy, sweet, loving cat biba bella. when i brought her home to live with me 2 years ago from a rescue centre, she was thought to be around two years old. she is very camera shy so i don't get to take many pictures of her as she runs off as soon she spots me stealing a photo. i simply love her to bits and feel very lucky to have her in my life. nine days after she came to live here she surprised and delighted me: she gave birth to her daughter orla under the sofa!

im not a fan of facebook and im not into tweeting on twitter but i do love flickr! so i am amazed and delighted to see that my hyggelig happy flickr pool now has over 400 members! 4891 wonderful photos have been added so far, and constantly bring a big smile to my face! if you have been adding photos then thanks a million for helping to spread the hyggelig and the happy! here's just a few of my current faves. i took these photos a couple of weeks ago during a wee trip to glasgow's winter gardens with a friend. the woman was dressed so beautifully and we sat and listened to her play many lovely tunes on her wonderful instrument (i have no idea what it is). the kids all around were fascinated and i'm sure she made their day a lot brighter, she certainly did mine!

other good things: stine has a fab new blog!, a cool exhibition over at the owl and lion gallery that incudes a print from emily. a great design blog - gentle pure space -takes its name from this lovely poem.

50/50 is an exhibition by members of glasgow print studio running in the gallery from today until 27 june. yours truly has two screenprints for sale entitled 'weird orla doll' inspired by my l-u-r-v-e for all things designed by orla kiely including this doll i have that looks like an alien. if you happen to be in glasgow this exhibition is well worth a look for the diverse styles and techniques used by the print makers.

hello june! and cheerio to metal urbain - the exhibition by artist jim lambie that's been at the modern institute glasgow, where i took squillions of photos. i loved the mix of concrete, blasts of bright colour and metal armour.

apart from being a bit poorly of late i have been busy getting ready to take part in another exhibition here, more about it soon......

hello! it is meant to be spring here but i am afraid i'm ready to get back into my winter woolies as it is COLD here in scotland! bbbrrrr. last week i was sitting out at my allotment drinking hot soup with hailstones falling on me. nice. how come it can be so cold but i can still have hayfever!! anyway i am warming up nicely by looking though the blog, web and flickr of annie larson, my favourite knitter of all things cozy who now has an online shop.

i love this time of the year when the cherry blossom trees are in bloom, and when the wind blows the petals off the trees the ground looks like a carpet of confetti.

i took my last picture with this camera this week before i sadly (sob sob) dropped it. yup my third (more expensive to repair than buying a new one) camera in less than three years bites the dust.

now this is what i call very hyggelig and very happy and i LOVE it all - including the sealpelt's (top) made from 100% icelandic wool. all from the amazing vik prjonsdottir created by five designers.

i could do with snuggling up in a seablanket right now as spring has disappeared and it is cold, rainy and grey again here in glasgow. hurry back please spring, i miss you.

i discovered this bird in spital st london whilst reading the great spitalfields life a blog devoted to my favorite part of london. the bird is by belgian street artist roa who's other work can be found on many a derelict building in city's including paris, berlin and belgium.

just as i was uploading this photo i turned on the radio and a jazzy version of 'my heart belongs to daddy' was playing. couldn't have been more fitting. my dad passed away 19 years ago today. he was a kind, gentle, wonderful dad. i was very lucky to have him as my father. he was probably at his happiest lying on the floor with headphones on listening to jazz music very loud with a big smile on his face! i miss him like crazy.

when cissy tigerlily came to live with us last year she was a very skinny stray who attempted to eat biba and orla's food every mealtime after scoffing hers down very quickly. she now walks away from food when she is full like the other two, however she has slowly grown very chubby indeed. in my endeavour to get her to slim down i have been taking her a 'walk' on the courtyard outside now it's springtime. problem is she just plonks herself down on the ground or curls herself around my legs. i know with bad eyesight she is a wee bit wary of being outside. i hope with less food, more playtime and many more 'walks' my little snugglebug will trim up nicely.

the postman brought me a little letter full of sweet smelling and beautiful spring treasures sent from juliane in sweden, a big thanks my dear - cissy thinks this one was for her! +++ i felt very luck for many days of blue skies and sunshine +++ i spent a lovely sunny afternoon listening to birds tweeting in my allotment +++ i got to say hello to a swan in the park +++ i was smiling and feeling chilly whilst watching this fabby video found via mieke willems +++ i was loving looking at all the cheery flowers spring has brought +++ my sister who is studying aromatherapy gave me a much needed and wonderful massage. all in all a lovely week! i hope yours was too!
